The house was built in the 1960s for US Ambassador Robert M. Scotten. He was a personal friend of President F.D. Roosevelt. The house was designed by British architect Barbara Hill. Inspired by a book on life in the Windward Islands, she moved from England to Barbados in 1958.
Other well known designers have added their touches over the years. The floors are designed by highly acclaimed theatre set designer Oliver Messel. The Chinese gazebo was designed by Larry Warren. The new garden lighting was by Bruce Monro.
The house is a graceful blend of elegance and practicality. At the heart is a grand columned living room with a 14 foot ceiling. This opens onto an 80 foot partially covered terrace. This is the perfect spot for relaxing or dining al fresco.
Nelson Gay has been refurbished and presents well. It has new floors in the master bedrooms. There are new telecoms and new TV audio-visual facilities in the media room. There is a new chattel house with its own bathroom and kitchenette. The amazing gardens have also been replanted.
Nelson Gay has always been famous for its lush gardens. There is excellent swimming in the sea immediately in front of house. The accommodation is on one level. The pool is magnificent and is one of the few pools in Barbados that is heated.
The octagonal Chinese gazebo was designed by Larry Warren. It is located at the end of the garden close to the beach. This is a peaceful place to sit and enjoy cocktails as the sun goes down.

• Garden - walkways have been re-laid to provide a safe and even surface. Hundreds of new plants have been planted and there is new grass and new lighting
• Terraces - 2 new 20’ x 20’ awnings and the outdoor dining area for 14 has also been upgraded

At the end of the garden is a half mile of pristine, sandy beach. There is a reef to one side which is ideal for snorkelling. There is also a large area immediately in front of the villa. This is roped off with buoys for safe swimming.
At night the garden takes on another identity with new spectacular garden lighting.
Nelson Gay has various seating arrangements within the gardens. These include a garden gazebo by the beach. There is also a beautiful candlelit dining room which currently seats 12. This is ideal for evening meals.
There are eight bedrooms in total. Nelson Gay also has eight bathrooms. There are five bedrooms in the main house. Each is decorated in a soothing palette of green and white with chandelier lighting and tiled flooring also designed by Messel.
The bedrooms are each individually air-conditioned.
One bedroom is located in the South Wing. This features his and hers en suite bathrooms with showers. The bedroom’s external doors fold back to reveal a charming private terrace. This has a sitting area and verdant foliage.
The North Wing houses the other four bedrooms, two of which comprise an impressively spacious Master Suite connected by a large en suite bathroom with shower. There is a second en suite bathroom in the suite as well.
The cottage bedroom (Bedroom 6) accommodates a King bed with en-suite facilities and air conditioning.
Chattel House bedroom (Bedroom 7) accommodates a King bed.
Chattel House 2 bedroom (Bedroom 8) accommodates a King bed.Nelson Gay is just a few minutes drive from historical Speightstown. Here you will find a supermarket, banks, bars and restaurants.
